Two Scholarships for Galesburg High School students now administered by Galesburg Community Foundation

Galesburg Community Foundation will now be administering two scholarships for Galesburg High School seniors.

Galesburg District #205 had been overseeing the Dolores M. Ryner Business Scholarship and Verna May Sargent Scholarship for many years. “School districts don’t ordinarily run scholarship programs, but when these scholarships were established, there really wasn’t anywhere for these individuals to go but to the school district they knew and trusted,” says Joshua Gibb, President & CEO of Galesburg Community Foundation.

John Asplund, Galesburg CUSD #205 Superintendent, reached out to Gibb about transitioning the administration of the scholarships to the Community Foundation, which already oversees eight other scholarships throughout the region.

“As educators, our primary goal is to ensure every student has access to opportunities that empower them to succeed,” says Asplund. “By partnering with Galesburg Community Foundation, we can leverage their expertise and resources to maximize the impact of these scholarships while ensuring sustained, impartial management for the benefit of all deserving students.”

Galesburg Community Foundation has a simple application process, with one online application to apply for all 10 of the Community Foundation’s scholarships. The Community Foundation also has established processes and criteria for awarding scholarships, ensuring impartiality in the selection process for all scholarships.

“At Galesburg Community Foundation, we specialize in managing funds and administering grants and scholarships,” says Gibb. “We have the expertise and infrastructure to handle the logistics of scholarship programs efficiently.”

Dolores M. Ryner Business Scholarship

Dolores Ryner was a business teacher at Galesburg High School from 1953 to 1981. When she passed in 1996, she gifted farmland to the Galesburg School District. The annual income from the farm is used to fund a scholarship for a Galesburg High School student planning a career in business or business education. The student awarded the scholarship may renew it for up to four years.

Verna May Sargent Scholarship

When Earl Sargent passed in 2007, he endowed a memorial scholarship fund in the name of his wife, Verna May Sargent. Two scholarships are awarded annually to Galesburg High School seniors planning to major in music or a music-related field. Preference is given to students with an emphasis in voice.

Galesburg High School students interested in applying for the Dolores M. Ryner Business Scholarship or Verna May Sargent Scholarship can apply for the scholarships between February 1 and March 1.

Scholarships Help Local Students Achieve Their Goals

Someday, Clara Asplund of Oneida would like to work locally as a high school agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. A scholarship the ROWVA senior received to attend the University of Illinois this fall is going to help her on her way to achieving her goals.

Clara received the Oneida Telephone Exchange Scholarship to pursue her college education, which is awarded to a ROWVA High School senior to help with tuition, fees, and room and board.

“It means a lot to me to have received this scholarship,” says Clara, who was active in FFA, 4-H, student council, marching band, Federation, Scholastic Bowl, cross country, and National Honor Society at ROWVA. “I am very grateful to have my community’s support behind me and my future.”

There are eight scholarships available through the Galesburg Community Foundation, and each has its own criteria. “Through these scholarships, generous individuals are helping students pursue their dreams, which is good for our communities,” said Jillian Isaacson, Director of Grants & Programs at Galesburg Community Foundation.

Oneida Telephone Exchange Scholarship – Clara Asplund, Agriculture Education, University of Illinois, and Clara Kuelper, Ag and Biological Engineering, University of Illinois

Lyle Pierce Athletic and Leadership Scholarship – Chloe Allen, Elementary Education, Monmouth College

The Millie Martin Memorial Academic Achievement Award – Emma Seiboldt, Biology Major, Ag Business Minor, Iowa State University

Helen H. Wetherbee Nursing Scholarship – Jennifer Hamilton, Chamberlain University; Kaylee McGarry, Illinois State University; Alycia Haun, Illinois State University; Natalie Brakeville, Bradley University

GALESBURG, Ill. (January 19, 2021)– Galesburg Community Foundation will begin accepting scholarship applications on Monday, February 1, 2021. Scholarships are open to students who reside in Knox and Warren Counties and meet the criteria associated with the offerings.

Applications are available and must be submitted online at the Community Foundation’s website, www.YourGCF.org/scholarships. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 1, 2021, at 4:00 pm. These scholarships are available thanks to generous community members who love their community and give back to their community in the best ways possible. A variety of scholarships are available to students from Knox and Warren Counties.

Tiffany Springer, director of grants and programs for the Community Foundation said, “We offer a variety of scholarships and encourage all students to visit our website to learn more. GALESBURG, Ill. (January 28, 2019)– Galesburg Community Foundation will begin accepting scholarship applications for the below detailed scholarships on Friday, February 1, 2019. These scholarships are open to students who reside in Knox and Warren Counties and meet the criteria listed below. Applications are available and must be submitted online at GCF’s website, www.YourGCF.org. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 15, 2019. These scholarships are available thanks to generous community members who love their community and give back to their community in the best ways possible. The following scholarships are available for this year’s application period:

Becky Carlson Scholarship
Seniors at United High School are encouraged to apply for the Becky Carlson Scholarship. Applicants must be a United High School Senior and have participated in the Special Education Program at United School District #304 K-12.

Cole Steele Memorial Scholarship
Students at Knoxville High School are encouraged to apply for the Cole Steele Memorial Scholarship. Applicants must be a Knoxville High School Senior interested in pursuing an education in a vocation program. Students having a background or experience in agriculture will be given additional consideration.

Helen H. Wetherbee Nursing Scholarship
Students accepted into a school of nursing or currently studying under a nursing program are encouraged to apply for the Helen H. Wetherbee Nursing Scholarship. This scholarship is open to Knox and Warren County area students.

John E. Bohan Excellence in Athletics Scholarship
High school seniors from United High School are encouraged to apply for the John E. Bohan Excellence in Athletics Scholarship. This scholarship is open to senior football players who have been accepted into a collegiate program of study.

Oneida Telephone Exchange Scholarship
The Oneida Telephone Exchange Scholarship is awarded to an eligible ROWVA High School senior. Eligible applicant families must be in good standing with the Oneida Telephone Exchange Coop and/or Oneida Networks Services.

Steve McBride Scholarship
The Steve McBride Scholarship is awarded to two graduates of United High School who are residents of North Henderson, Suez, Kelly or Spring Grove townships. Applicants are reviewed based on a written application and in-person interviews with the Steve McBride Scholarship committee. The award will be given to the most deserving seniors at United High School.

The Lyle Pierce Athletic and Leadership Scholarship
The Lyle Pierce Athletic and Leadership Scholarship will be awarded to one male and one female graduate of any Warren County high school that demonstrates leadership and perseverance on and off the playing field. Applicants must plan to attend a 4-year college or university and major in education. Students must be nominated by the athletic director of their attending high school in order to apply for this scholarship. Please see your high school principal or athletic director as this is a paper application which must be completed and received by the deadline.

Millie Martin Memorial Academic Achievement Scholarship
The Millie Martin Memorial Academic Achievement Scholarship is awarded each year to a female student graduating from ROWVA High School with the highest grade point average. No written or online application needed.
