If you’ve been thinking about making a charitable gift in 2026, there’s still time to take advantage of the Illinois Gives Tax Credit—tax credits are still available but are expected to be exhausted soon.
The Illinois Gives Tax Credit Program offers Illinois taxpayers a 25% state income tax credit when they make a gift to eligible permanent endowment funds held by Qualified Community Foundations, including Galesburg Community Foundation.
The program was introduced by the State of Illinois in 2025 to encourage long-term charitable giving and strengthen the future of Illinois communities. While interest in the program has grown, 2026 tax credits have not yet been exhausted, meaning donors still have an opportunity to participate this year.
“If you’ve been considering a charitable gift, now is a great time to explore whether an Illinois Gives gift could make sense for you. You can make a lasting investment in a cause you care about while also receiving a significant Illinois tax benefit,” said Sarah Grant, Vice President of Development at Galesburg Community Foundation.
Gifts made through the Illinois Gives program support permanent endowment funds, which are designed to provide charitable support for generations to come. The principal is invested, with a portion of the earnings used to provide ongoing support to nonprofits and charitable causes.
The tax credit is 25% of the qualifying gift, with a maximum credit of $100,000 per taxpayer each year. Credits are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to the program’s annual statewide limit.
Galesburg Community Foundation is among the Qualified Community Foundations eligible to participate in the program and can help donors navigate the application process and identify eligible endowment funds that align with their charitable interests.
