Join Our Team: Assistant Manager at Community Treasures Thrift Store

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Manager supports the Thrift Store Manager in carrying out the day-to-day operations of Community Treasures, a non-profit thrift shop that reflects the Galesburg Community Foundation’s “full circle of philanthropy.” Donors contribute gently used items, volunteers transform those gifts into a fair and welcoming retail experience, and proceeds return to the community through the Community Foundation’s grantmaking. 

The Assistant Manager plays a vital support role—helping the Manager ensure smooth store operations, encouraging and assisting volunteers, and welcoming donors and customers. This position helps create a store culture rooted in gratitude, fairness, and service while reinforcing the Community Foundation’s mission to build a healthy community through philanthropy. 

The Assistant Manager is energetic, customer-focused, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment, and serves as acting Manager when needed. This is a full-time, non-exempt position, with occasional weekends required.   

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES 

General Operations  

  • Assist the Manager in ensuring smooth daily store operations. 
  • Serve as head cashier as scheduled, completing cash reconciliation, reports, and deposits. 
  • Help maintain clean, safe, and well-organized front-of-shop and receiving areas. 
  • Assist in keeping merchandise stocked, rotated, and attractively displayed. 
  • Support donation pick-ups and deliveries using the company van as assigned. 
  • Monitor supply levels (bags, tags, cleaning products, paper goods, etc.) and provide timely updates to the Manager. 
  • Assist in all departments when workload requires. 
  • Carry out daily task priorities as directed by the Manager. 
  • Act on behalf of the Manager only in their absence, ensuring operations continue smoothly. 

Volunteer Management 

  • Assist the Manager in recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting volunteers. 
  • Encourage, guide, and recognize volunteers in their service, helping them feel valued and connected to the mission. 
  • Provide constructive feedback to the Manager on volunteer needs, concerns, and successes. 
  • Help sustain a positive, productive, and fun volunteer culture that reflects the Community Foundation’s values. 

Community and Donor Relations  

  • Welcome donors, customers, and volunteers in a spirit of gratitude and fairness. 
  • Assist with processing donations to ensure they are handled respectfully and efficiently. 
  • Support donor pick-ups and maintain professional communication with donors. 
  • Represent Community Treasures at events and activities as assigned by the Manager (e.g., Knox-Community Day, Volunteer Appreciation events). 
  • Assist with promotional efforts and customer engagement strategies under the Manager’s direction. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES  

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). 
  • Customer service mindset with an emphasis on gratitude and fairness. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a large volunteer team and diverse customer and donor base. 
  • Flexible and adaptable in a busy, fast-paced environment. 
  • Reliable, with excellent attendance and follow-through. 
  • Physically able to lift and move furniture, appliances, and boxes. 
  • Basic math skills; experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE  

Associates degree or equivalent; or 1 – 3 years of retail, business or management experience preferred.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS  

This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks, including extended hours of standing, walking, and working on your feet. There is continual moving with significant lifting, bending, walking and moving furniture and items of all sizes.
